Fair Hill Nature Center Stormwater Retrofits

Fair Hill Nature Center Stormwater Retrofits

Project Team
SMC Center for Watershed Protection
Project Description

The Fair Hill Nature Center Retrofits excelled for its comprehensive design that used multiple stormwater treatment techniques to treat stormwater while fitting into the surrounding landscape and desired land use. The final design used a combination of bioretention facilities, regenerative stormwater conveyances, permeable pavers, and offline infiltration areas to provide stormwater management while maintaining public access for trout fishing, deer hunting, and fox hunts with horses and hounds. Being highly accessible to the public, the site contains educational signage, as well as several pollinator gardens that will help with habitat management and public outreach on the importance of pollinator species. Also noteworthy was the nearly 3 acres of impervious surface removed from the site as part of the project.

Best BMP Retrofit

This category recognizes the best stormwater projects constructed in the last five years to improve runoff quality from areas that were developed in the past without effective stormwater treatment. The retrofit can involve either modifications to an existing stormwater BMP or construction of new BMP.
