The project that won second place in this category in 2014 serves as a superb example of a Best Management Practice performing critical uptake of nutrients as well as providing noteworthy habitat function. Its creation of 2,000 square feet of wetland plant/biomass which are now refuge to fish and nekton as well as habitat for insects, birds, crabs and other biota is undeniably impressive! In addition the project’s use of reclaimed and recycled trash from the inner harbor and the use of hundreds of volunteers, the groups responsible for this project deserve acclaim for the civic engagement and public education they have sparked. The success of the Inner Harbor Bioflotsam Treatment Wetlands speak to the unmistakable power in public/private partnerships.
